We've had a paper accepted at GALA 2025! Here's the abstract:
We propose an integrative design process – a collaborative, multi-stakeholder approach – for creating "seriously fun games" addressing complex social issues. The process emphasises iterative co-discovery, co-design, and co-evaluation, acknowledging the inherent challenges of creating serious games. Through case studies like "Built from Beneath" and "T Cell Titans", we discuss how engagement with stakeholders is critical in defining the game's purpose and iteratively refining narrative and mechanics. This process prioritises responsiveness to diverse perspectives, recognising the need to iterate throughout the development lifecycle. Ultimately, this robust process aims to deliver impactful games that are both engaging and contribute meaningfully to addressing complex societal issues.
